Everything Texas Seniors Need to Know About Turning 65

Medicare enrollment is time-sensitive. Missing your window can mean gaps in coverage and costly penalties. Here's what you need to know — explained simply.

Your Medicare Enrollment Timeline

You have a 7-month window to enroll in Medicare — and timing matters more than most people realize.

3 months before
Ideal Time to Enroll

3 Months Before Your Birthday

Your Initial Enrollment Period begins. Sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B now so coverage starts the month you turn 65. This is the best time to contact us — we'll help you choose supplemental coverage before your start date.

Best window — coverage begins on your birthday
Your birthday month
Your Medicare Begins

Your 65th Birthday Month

Medicare Part A and B can begin now. If you enrolled in the prior three months, coverage starts this month. If you haven't enrolled yet, contact us immediately — you're still within your enrollment window.

Happy birthday — your Medicare starts today!
1–3 months after
Still Eligible — Act Now

1–3 Months After Your Birthday

The final stretch of your 7-month window. You can still enroll, but coverage may be delayed by up to 3 months. Waiting past this window can trigger a permanent 10% Part B late enrollment penalty per year you delayed.

Last chance — penalties apply if you miss this window
A
Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A.

B
Medical Insurance

Medicare Part B

Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medical equipment. Requires a monthly premium (adjusted by income).

C
Medicare Advantage

Medicare Part C

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurers. Often includes dental, vision, hearing, and drug coverage.

D
Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D

Prescription drug coverage through private plans. Enrolling on time is critical — late enrollment penalties apply even if you don't take medications now.

Common Medicare Mistakes to Avoid

Missing Your Enrollment Window

Waiting too long can mean delayed coverage and lifetime late-enrollment penalties — up to 10% per year for Part B.

Assuming Employer Coverage Continues

Retirees often mistakenly assume they're covered by a spouse's or former employer's plan. Coordination of benefits can be complex.

Skipping Part D Because You're Healthy

No prescriptions now doesn't mean never. Late enrollment penalties are permanent — they follow you for life.

Choosing the Wrong Supplement Plan

Not all Medigap plans are equal. The right plan depends on your doctors, health history, travel habits, and budget.

No Medical Exam Options Available

Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Receive a cash benefit for every day you're hospitalized — use it any way you choose. Covers what Medicare doesn't: daily costs, transportation, meals, lost income for your family.

Cash Paid Directly to You

Cancer, Heart Attack & Stroke Coverage

A life-changing diagnosis shouldn't mean financial devastation. Receive a lump-sum cash benefit upon diagnosis — use it for treatments, travel, mortgage payments, or anything you need.

Lump-Sum Cash Benefit at Diagnosis

Recovery Care Coverage

Rehabilitation after illness or surgery can be long and expensive. Recovery Care bridges the gap — covering skilled nursing facilities, in-home care, and rehabilitation costs Medicare leaves behind.
